Greasemonkey is a Minefield

Sunday, August 26th, 2007

Internet Duct Tape has a post up talking about GreaseMonkey, how to install it and how nice it can be.

I thought it was funny though, that upon following the link to Userscripts.org you are greeted with a large red banner that gives a dire warning:

A malicious user is uploading scripts that steal cookies.

Extra caution is recommended when installing recently uploaded/updated scripts.

The resulting thread is full of good information on the topic, as well as a good number of poor souls who aren’t tech savvy but were using GreaseMonkey. It is too bad that Userscripts.org has to deal with malicious people. Thankfully it is just a case of people grabbing scripts, adding code to farm cookies, and re-uploading them as a new version. Shouldn’t be hard to track, but it still creates somewhat of a minefield for the users.

GreaseMonkey looks like a very nice plug-in for Firefox, but it should come with a good warning for the less technical people. User created content and plug-ins are definitely good in the long run, but you do have to be a bit wary.

The New American Gladiators

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

NBC is bringing back the American Gladiators.

We all knew this day was coming, the idea is too much to resist.

Many a Saturday of my youth was spent watching this show.

Meet the Heavy

Monday, August 20th, 2007

This video is hilarious. Great marketing. In less than a minute and a half they portray the character of Heavy Weapons Guy flawlessly. Team Fortress 2 looks like it will be a lot of fun, I will definitely try it out.

If you’d like to see a higher rez video it is available here. Check out their other trailers as well.

Gametrailers has a video that talks briefly about their approach to the visuals.

“It costs $400,000 to fire this weapon… for 12 seconds.”

Grosse-Pointe Blank

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

Grosse-Pointe Blank is on my YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS movie list. It’s funny, has some action, and let’s not forget it has Jeremy Piven.

The real reason for this post is that I saw a review of it recently, at Double Viking (warning, the article is fine but the rest of the site is NSFW).

Every review should be like this. Simple, with pictures, and a good sense of humor.

If you have time, read their other reviews:

Whether you have time or not, these are all movies you must see.

Custom Guitar Hero

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

Here is more evidence to show that if your fans go to great lengths to do something, it should be a feature in your next game.

Apparently people have figured out how to create custom songs for the PS2 version of Guitar Hero 2.

My favorite one so far is the Dueling Banjos:

Rejected

Monday, August 13th, 2007

Every once in awhile Rejected by Don Hertzfeldt comes across my path. It gets funnier every time I watch it.

I think it is getting close to the point where I just need to show my support and buy the DVD.

My New Computer

Friday, August 10th, 2007

My faithful computer of five years died a horrible death last week. I’ve tried all I can and it still won’t even post bios. A dead motherboard or CPU on a five year old computer means only one thing.

Time for an upgrade!

Lions, Crocodiles, and Bison

Saturday, August 4th, 2007

This video is amazing. I doubt that baby bison survived much longer though, after being drug around by lions for that long.
